“…in a word, no condition can be so bad but God can change it.” – The Biblical Illustrator
“God is the fountain of life and power. It is easy for Him to change the wilderness into a fruitful field for His people, and He will do it for the glory of His own name.” – Family Bible Notes
“God would rather change the order of nature than that they should want anything, who cry to Him by true faith in their miseries.” – Geneva Bible Footnotes
What is a desert?
According to Dictionary.com, a “desert” is “a region so arid because of little rainfall… any area in which few forms of life can exist because of lack of water…or any place lacking in something.”
According to Dictionary.com, some synonyms for “desert” are – “waste, wasteland, and barren wilderness.”
Spiritually speaking, for the Christian, this world can be likened unto a “desert” – due to its rejection of Christ, the Source and Giver of life. It can be suitably described as – “a dry and thirsty land, where no water is.” (Psalm 63:1)
The Biblical Illustrator confirmed this by saying – “Even when the world is at its best, it is but a dry land for saints.”
John Darby added – “For Christ and for the new man, the world is a desert, without anything in it to refresh the soul.”
On his journey through this earthly “wilderness,” the Christian – at times – may find himself going through “seasons” – life’s “desert seasons” – when he feels all alone. During this period of time, he seems to hear nothing from God…yearns for His voice and guidance…and thirsts for anything from Him that might point him out of this “dry” place.
When he prays, the heavens seem like brass. Days turn into weeks…weeks into months …months into years – with absolutely no change in sight!
Or it may be that, on all sides, he is faced with “deserts” where the life or presence of Jesus simply cannot be found. This is when his home can be likened unto a “desert” – along with his marriage… church… workplace… neighborhood, community, or nation. And like the children of Israel who travelled through the “great and terrible wilderness,” he finds himself “battling” – on a daily basis – “fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought” (Deuteronomy 8:15) (spiritually speaking).
Perhaps, you are experiencing your very own personal “desert” right now. Your family members are not saved. Your children are backslidden. In the workplace, you are surrounded by ungodliness, vulgarity, and perversion of the greatest proportion. An antichrist spirit seems to reign in the schools. You cannot find a church which is spiritually alive – having the Presence of the Lord manifested in each service…the unadulterated Word of God preached from the pulpit…or salvations, healings, deliverances, and miracles taking place from week to week. And, lastly, your nation seemingly is spiraling downward at a rapid speed to destruction – under the judgment of God.
In this update, I have several promises from God for you to claim.
One promise is found in Isaiah 43:19 which says – “Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make… rivers in the desert.”
In a sense, God is saying to you – “I know that this world is a ‘desert,’ a ‘wilderness,’ a ‘dry and thirsty land, where no water is.’ i know that there will be times in your life when you will experience life’s ‘desert’ seasons. And I know that, on a daily basis, you will come face-to-face with personal ‘desert” situations. However, it is in those places where I will change the course of nature – so to speak – and work miracles for you. In the most unlikely place and when you least expect it, I will bring refreshing and invigorating streams that will turn your ‘desert’ into an oasis. Your ‘parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water.’ (Isaiah 35:7) Those situations or persons who are likened unto the ‘parched earth’ or burning sand will become a lake of pure and refreshing water.”
Basically, with deliberation, God is saying to you – “I will.” “I will” do the impossible for you.
Unlike when man says – “I will,” Charles Spurgeon said – “When God says, ‘I will,’ His resolution is supported by omnipotence…it is sealed with immutability…it will be carried out in faithfulness.” In other words, you can count on it!
“For I will pour…floods upon the dry ground…” (Isaiah 44:3) In your state of barrenness, where the “ground” is said to be “dry” (in a parched and impenetrable condition), God promises the copious and abundant blessing of His Holy Spirit.
In the Scriptures, water is an emblem frequently used to represent Divine influences.
The Pulpit Commentary said – “There is no refreshment to the faint and weary soul comparable to the pouring out upon it of God’s Spirit.”
Matthew Henry added – “If the ground be ever so dry, God has floods of grace to water it with.”
“I will even make…rivers in the desert.”
“I will pour…floods upon the dry ground…”
Lastly, in your “dry ground” of sin, sorrow, solitude, and separation, God also promises – “I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys: I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water.” (Isaiah 41:18)
“I will open rivers in high places”
This is a marvelous promise! Upon the mountains, by course of nature, there are no rivers. Yet God is promising here to cause “rivers” to flow from dry and barren hills.
The Biblical Illustrator said – “A river on the top of a mountain is a wonderful thing; but God can make it so.”
God can easily change the spiritual condition of the “plot of ground” on which you live or work. It can go from a very “dry” place to one inundated by God’s grace and mighty Holy Spirit.
“I will open rivers in high places”
Here the “high places” denote barrenness and nakedness. The hills are destitute of trees. They are situated in a dry and lonely desert – without water. Everything appears to be desperate. You perceive no ways or methods of relief.
This is a promise that God will meet and bless you in situations and from sources where you least expect refreshment and comfort. He promises to perform miracles contrary to the order and nature of things.
This promise proves that God has sufficient power in Himself and needs not to borrow from another. He is not confined to the order of things. He can easily change them so that waters flow on top of mountains, fountains in valleys, and pools in deserts – contrary to the course of nature.
So, in the time of adversity and affliction, in the extremity of distress, and when almost all hope is gone, He can and will bring change. He will relieve your necessities – contrary to all hope and outward appearance.
Isaiah 41:20 concludes by saying –“That they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of the LORD hath done this…”
God will bring such wonderful change to your circumstances whereby all who see it will be made to acknowledge that this was His work alone.
Never forget – the God Who made the dry land in the waters (Red Sea) can produce waters in the driest land. All because He is God!
The Biblical Illustrator said – “Now is the time for Divine interposition. When you seek water, and find none, God will open rivers for you.”
