What You Need Is More Of God's Life
You find yourself in all kinds of distressing circumstances. No matter which way you turn, you are feeling as though you will not make it. The devil is continuously inferring that you will never get your miracle or breakthrough - that all hope is gone. But the Lord Jesus is saying to you - "Pray for more life - more of My Life."
"More life is the cure for all our ailments."
"Our best protection from tempters and persecutors is more life."
"If quickened by the Holy Ghost we shall be sure to exhibit a holy character."
"When the inner life is vigorous all is well."
"Because God is love He will give us life; because He is kind He will again kindle the heavenly flame within us."
- all of the above quotes are from Charles Spurgeon
"When we find ourselves dull, we must go to God and beg of Him to quicken us." - Matthew Henry
There is a short prayer found in the Scriptures which is one of the most powerful prayers that any Christian could ever pray. That prayer is - "Quicken me, O Lord..."
In this study, we would like to show you how - in just about every situation that you will ever face - the answer to your dilemma will be more life - more of God's eternal life. It's that simple!
Do you find yourself dead and lifeless in your walk with the Lord? In Psalm 80:18, the Psalmist said - "So will not we go back from Thee: quicken us, and we will call upon Thy name." In the discharge of his Christian duty...in order to never revolt from God to idolatry or wickedness...and to be faithful and obedient in serving Him, he prayed for God's quickening grace...His tranquility...and His life to restore, revive, and animate him.
In Psalm 119:25, the Psalmist prayed - "My soul cleaveth unto the dust: quicken thou me according to Thy word." Here he felt as though his soul was cleaving to the things of the earth - to low, base, and unworthy things - rather than to heavenly things or the Lord Jesus Christ.. His affections were set upon the pleasures of this world. Hence, he cried out to God for an increase of His fresh life - increased stamina, vigor, and strength so that he could rise above all low propensities unto better and spiritual things. He desired that the Lord would put life into his affairs and affections and cure him of all spiritual deadness.
In Psalm 119:37, the Psalmist prayed - "Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken Thou me in Thy way." Here he prayed for restraining grace to keep him from gazing upon the vanities of this world - riches, honors, pleasures, profits, and idols. He did not want to look upon that which was vain, empty, transitory, and likely to lead astray. He knew that "beholding the vanities" of this world would only bring death to his spirit and slacken his spiritual pace. Hence, he cried out for God's constraining grace to make him lively, vigorous, and fervent as he ran his race. He cried out for His life, energy, and vigor so that he could walk in the path of truth - without stumbling.
In Psalm 119:88, the Psalmist prayed - "Quicken me after Thy lovingkindness; so shall I keep the testimony of Thy mouth." He knew that without spiritual life, he could not walk in obedience. Therefore, he earnestly prayed that the Lord God would revive him...cause him to live... and keep him alive. All he needed was the boundless energy of His grace to revive him in his personal piety, and he would remain faithful to His commands.
In Psalm 119:40, the Psalmist prayed - "Behold, I have longed after Thy precepts: quicken me in Thy righteousness." He was dying and desired for the Lord to give him life. It is interesting to note that his argument for receiving an answer to his prayer was his evident affection toward the word of God. Because he loved, delighted in, and yearned to know and do its commands, he was confident that God would reward him with His quickening power and life.
In Psalm 119:159, the Psalmist prayed - "Consider how I love Thy precepts: quicken me, O LORD, according to Thy lovingkindness." Once again, the Psalmist expressed his ardent and unspeakable love for the Holy Scriptures. He thought of them...desired to know them...proclaimed them... and practised them with a great fervor of spirit. He loved them so much so that he was grieved with all those who didn't. Using this as a foundation for his prayer, he cried out for life - at a time in his life when his enemies were fiercely attacking...his faith was fainting...and his soul was swooning in sorrow.
In Psalm 119:93, the Psalmist prayed - "I will never forget Thy precepts: for with them Thou hast quickened me." This is the best resolution that anyone could ever make. This man's character and condition were changed by the Word of God, and he would never forget it. Through Its "precepts," he was given hope and spiritual life.
In Psalm 119:149, the Psalmist prayed - "Hear my voice according to Thy lovingkindness: O LORD, quicken me according to Thy judgment." The best way to be delivered from troubles is to be given more life so as to escape from death. Strength needs to be added to life so as not to be overloaded with its burdens. The Psalmist realized this truth so well and pleaded God's lovingkindness - His "cream of kindness" - in order to receive His refreshing and reviving that would stir him up to a greater performance of his duties.
In Psalm 119:107, the Psalmist prayed - "I am afflicted very much: quicken me, O LORD, according unto Thy word." Again, in Psalm 119:50, he prayed - "This is my comfort in my affliction: for Thy word hath quickened me." His consecration and obedience to the Lord caused him much affliction. Whether he faced affliction - in his body...family...by his enemies...through the temptations of Satan, the corruption of his own heart, or the supposed hiding of God's face - he found it to be true that the best remedy for tribulation is the quickening power of God's Holy Word. Through the Scriptures, his soul would be instantly raised above the thoughts of his present distress...he would find life and vigor to bear up under his trials... and he would be delivered from all bondages. He became a
witness to the fact that the life-giving Word increases the force of the inner life - reviving the drooping spirit... quickening the graces of the Holy Spirit to endure...making alive that which was dead in duty and cold and indifferent...and effecting a vigor, liveliness, and cheerfulness - in spite of the present circumstances.
In Psalm 119:154, the Psalmist prayed - "Plead my cause, and deliver me: quicken me according to Thy word." He was caught in the battle of his life. He needed outside help. He called upon the name of the Lord of hosts Who came to his rescue and fought his fight...stood in his stead...bore his burden...undertook his cause...and brought him out to liberty. Many mighty and crafty men were bringing false accusations against him. He felt weak and unable to bear up under his troubles. His spirit was drooping and sinking, but God came to his rescue with His "quickening" power - giving him more love, grace, faith, courage, and strength than he ever had before.
In Psalm 143:11, David prayed - "Quicken me, O LORD, for Thy name's sake..." In Psalm 119:156, the Psalmist prayed - "Great are Thy tender mercies, O LORD: quicken me according to Thy judgments." The situation was this. David's spirit was drooping. His hopes were almost gone. As was his normal practise, he cried out to the Lord for help. He petitioned Him for Life and Light - to revive and quicken his soul so that he could perform his duties. The psalmist in Psalm 119 understood that there was a measure of awakening that came as a result of God's judgments. Therefore, he begged to be quickened by these judgments rather than be left to a state of spiritual lethargy.
No matter where you find yourself at this moment in time - whether in prosperity or adversity - you need Life - God's Life. For each problem that you are facing, your answer can be found in His Life - a greater measure of it - which will push you over the top onto victory.
God can and will create a higher degree of spiritual life in you than you have right now. All you need to do is ask, by saying - "Quicken me, O Lord..." - and believing that He will!
We leave you with the words of Spurgeon -
"More life is the cure for all our ailments."
"When the inner life is vigorous all is well."
May God Bless His Word.
