The Sheer Horror Of Having God Almighty Laugh At You
God is laughing. Can you hear Him? He is not laughing as some suppose. It is not a joyful sound that can be heard. He is laughing at the powerless threats of His enemies. He sees that their "day of reckoning" is coming.
"Oh, what are His frowns if His smiles be so terrible?"
- Thomas Adams - Biblical Illustrator - Old Testament
"God is King of the universe. What are the puny kings of the earth compared to Him?" - Nelson's New Illustrated Bible Commentary
"The greatest, cleverest, and most malicious of the enemies of the church are only objects of ridicule to the Lord; their attempts are utterly futile, they need give no concern to our faith."
"In the end of all things it will be seen how utterly contemptible and despicable are all the enemies of the cause and kingdom of God."
- both quotes from Charles Spurgeon
"What sheer horror for the wicked to hear God's laughter directed against them!"
- Nelson's New Illustrated Bible Commentary
Psalm 2:4 says - "He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the LORD shall have them in derision."
Psalm 59:8 reiterates - "But Thou, O LORD, shall laugh at them: Thou shalt have all the heathen in derision."
The King of the universe looks down upon the nations as they rage...He sees the people trying to outwit Him...and He takes note of all the kings and rulers who are plotting against Him - trying feverishly to breaks their chains asunder and free themselves from what they consider to be slavery to Him. In other words, they are attempting to cast off or throw off His government or yoke. In response to the vain imaginations of the heathen, the opposition of kings, and the mad counsel of rulers, God laughs. He - Whose kingdom rules over all - laughs at them - considering them to be a company of fools. He sits undisturbed, unmoved, easy, and at rest - out of the reach of their impotent menaces and attempts.
David was encompassed by many enemies. These criminals and murderers rose up to destroy him. They were strong men - lurking in secret for his soul...prowling around like dogs...shouting insults at him and cursing his God...while being confident that no one could hear or see them. He cried out to God for help, and the Lord heard his cry. He came to David's defense, protected him, and turned his enemies' schemes into ridicule and contempt. He disappointed their counsels...sent them back to their camps in shame and confusion...and exposed them to the derision of others.
Proverbs 1:26 says - "I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh."
What happens when God calls out to people to turn from their wicked ways and turn toward Him and they won't come...when He pleads with them but all is in vain...and when they spurn His counsel and rebuke? In return, He promises to laugh at them and their distress...show no compassion toward them or have any mercy upon them...and mock when their storm of terror surrounds them.
Psalm 37:13 says - "The LORD shall laugh at him: for He seeth that his day is coming."
Here we see the wicked plotting against the just. They gnash upon the poor and needy with their teeth and and seek to "butcher" those who are upright in character. God - Who regards any assault against the righteous as one against Himself - laughs at these enraged schemers. He considers all their attempts to be vain and ineffectual. He disappoints their designs and confuses their practices. He knows certainly that destruction is following upon their heels. Just as they thought to crush the poor, needy, and righteous - even so will the foot of Justice trample them underfoot. Their day of long delayed punishment - appointed by God - is right around the corner.
Have you heard God laughing lately?
He is laughing at the heathen who are rebelling against His kingdom laws. He is laughing at their puny schemes to overthrow His government. He is laughing at their vain and futile attempts to wipe out Christianity in the earth.
"What sheer horror for the wicked to hear God's laughter directed against them!"
May we never, ever hear Him scornfully laugh at us as one of His enemies!
May God Bless His Word.
