We Live The Way We Do Because We Know God Knows
Who would wish the world to read all his thoughts and feelings for a single day? Who would wish his best friends to look in upon his naked soul as we can look into a room through a window? O what blushes and confusion; what a hanging down of the head, and what an effort to escape from the gaze of people would there be, if every one knew that all his secret feelings were seen by every person whom he met! Social enjoyment would end; and the now frivolous and blithe multitudes in the streets would become processions of downcast and blushing convicts. And yet all these are known to God. He reads every thought; sees every feeling, looks through the whole soul. How careful should we be to keep our hearts pure; how anxious that there should be nothing in the soul that we are not WILLING to have known!" - Barnes' Notes
From the very start, let's settle one thing - God knows all things..
You may contest - Oh, but every one knows that! Do they? Well, how many are living as though they know it?
In 1 Samuel 2:3, He is described as the "God of knowledge." Hannah argues that it is best that the heathen cease from talking so exceeding proudly and honor Him as the most wise God Who knows all things - when she says - "Talk no more so exceeding proudly, let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by Him actions are weighed."
The writer of Hebrews explained it in this way - "Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in His sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of Him with Whom we have to do"(Hebrews 4:13). Nothing in all of creation is hidden from Him. Hence, there is not one man, woman, boy, or girl who could ever conceal anything from Him.
"...all things are naked" - Every rising thought, budding desire, and propensity or suggestion of every man's heart is known to Him. Everything is exactly as it is - "naked" - meaning exposed, uncovered, and laid bare before His eyes. It is seen for what it really is. Therefore, excuses, reasons, and justifications will not stand before such a Being.
"...all things are...opened" - Here we have the picture of the powerless animal - about to be offered in a sacrifice. The priest bends the neck back so as to expose the throat to the knife for slaughter. This suggests to us a complete submission and defenselessness before the Priest. In a sense, we are likened unto that sacrificial lamb - laid bare before the "knife" of God's Word.
It is useless to try to hide anything from this God.
Job 34:22 tells us - "There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves." In other words, there is no dark or obscure place...dingy cavern...place of concealment remote from light...or thick darkness which can hide the evildoer from the discerning eye or avenging hand of this righteous God.
He knows "the secrets of men"(Romans 2:16) - the concealed thoughts, purposes, plans, motives, desires, lusts, and passions hidden from the view of others. All actions and secret intentions of the heart are open to Him. He and He alone has the power to "bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the heart"(1 Corinthians 4:5) - bring the secret sins into open day..discover the concealed designs of men's hearts...and expose their inclinations and purposes. In fact, as the appointed Judge of all mankind, He will one day - "bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil"(Ecclesiastes 12:14).
Knowing this - how are you living today - holily or ungodly?
Your answer will depend on whether or not you realize that God is Who He says He is - "the God of knowledge" - knowing everything. That certainly includes any secret sins, plans, or intentions of your heart.
It is utter insanity to hear what the Word says about God, yet live as though the opposite is true.
It's time like never before for God's people to get a hold of this truth and for this truth - in turn - to get a hold of them.
No one can hide anything from God. Hence, understanding this truth should result in the total absence of fornication, adultery, homosexuality, perversion, pornography, abusive behavior, pride, bitterness, idolatry, deception, lying, cheating, covetousness, etc. in the Christian camp. Sin of any form should be avoided at all costs - for we understand that God sees it all and will expose it before long.
How much of the Bible do you believe to be true?
After how much are you sincerely patterning your life?
What about the truths presented in this message?
Who will make a decisive effort to live more godly - knowing that the Lord Jesus - to Whom we will give an account - is taking note of all our thoughts, words, and deeds?
"...He(God) reads every thought; sees every feeling, looks through the whole soul. How careful should we be to keep our hearts pure; how anxious that there should be nothing in the soul that we are not WILLING to have known!"
Just how careful and anxious are you?
May God Bless His Word.
