A Different Place
Do you find that things are
just not the way they used to be? You are in a place that you have
never been before - a spiritually barren and dry place. What
should you do? What does the Bible say is your answer?
In Psalm 63:1-2, David cried
out - "O
God, Thou art my God; early will I seek Thee: my soul thirsteth for
Thee, my flesh longeth for Thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no
water is; To see Thy power and Thy glory, so as I have seen Thee in
the sanctuary."
In answer to that, Matthew Henry - the renowned
Bible commentator - remarked - "Our
desires must not only be offered up to God, but they must all
terminate in Him, desiring nothing more than God, but still more and
more of Him."
We live in a day and an hour when men are seeking after everything
and everyone but God. Resultantly, our land has become a
"dry and thirsty land, where no water
is."
It is pictured in the above Scripture as a barren, arid, dry, and
solitary wilderness - a parched land where the travelers are faint
and weary as a result of the journey. This is a perfect picture of
humanity today - desolate, faint, thirsty, and exhausted. They are
looking for satisfaction - something that will gratify the thirsting
of their parched souls. Because they have left God out of their
lives, the land offers no refreshment or relief for their utter
weariness.
We are reminded in Matthew 12:43 that the unclean
spirits "walk through dry places
seeking rest." Who would argue with the fact
that our lives today - like never before - are surrounded by so much
demonic activity? It is definitely a
"dry and thirsty land" in
which we live.
But, where is God - the
Fountain of Living Waters?
Where can we go to find Him?
When this particular Psalm was written, David was in the wilderness
of Judah - separated from the sanctuary. Even though he was distant
from the place of worship, he was determined
that he would draw God to the place where
he was at at the time. The way he would do this would be through his
earnest longings.
Psalm 63:1 expresses his heartfelt hunger -
"O God, Thou art my God..."
The first name "God"
is the Hebrew word Elohyim which is plural in number and is the word
usually used to designate God. The second title
"God" is the Hebrew word
Eel which signifies God
as the Strong and Mighty One. In other
words, He is the Almighty - the One Who has
"all power" "in heaven and in earth"(Matthew
28:18) and is able to deliver and save us from any and
every situation that we face.
He is not only God, but He is
your God.
David recognized the situation and the circumstances that were
surrounding him. What did he do? He sought
the Lord with his whole being. How? He sought
Him "early"
and earnestly.
What really matters to you
will be placed first on your agenda for the day.
David sought God "early."
Before other things came in to distract and sidetrack him or control
and direct him, he sought the Lord as his Strength and Power. He
sought Him with utmost care so as not to miss His blessing.
He also sought God earnestly - "my soul thirsteth for Thee, my flesh longeth for Thee..."(Psalm 63:1). With all his passions and desires - with his entire being - he longed supremely for His presence in his life.
What was David after? "To see Thy
power and Thy glory."(Psalm 63:2)
He had tasted of the goodness of the Lord(Psalm 34:8)
and saw His mighty power in the sanctuary. But he was in
"a different place"
now. He longed for that same presence in his life - now as then.
James 4:8 promises - "Draw
nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you..."
Perhaps as David, you find yourself in "a different place" than before.
You are now in a parched and dry land - so to speak - surrounded on
all sides by spiritual barrenness and demonic activity.
Don't be caught up with mundane things
as others.
Do as David did.
With your entire being, seek God
"early" and earnestly.
Give Him first place each day.
Long for His presence in your life as a parched traveler in an arid
desert longs for a drop of water.
God will refresh you with His power and His glory.
Just remember that God -
He is Your God!
Yearn for Him today!
You will not be denied!
May God Bless His Word.
