Saying They Are Walking With God -
But Are
They?
How many people are really
walking with God?
What does it entail?
Are you one of them?
May this message shed some light
on this subject for all.
What does it actually mean to
walk with God?
The Scriptures tell us that "...Enoch
walked with God..."(Genesis 5:24) and also that
"...Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with
God."(Genesis 6:9)
In Deuteronomy 13:4, Moses exhorted the people with these
words - "Ye shall walk after the LORD your
God, and fear Him, and keep His commandments, and obey His voice, and ye
shall serve Him, and cleave unto Him."
In Psalm 128:1, David called the man
"blessed" who did so -
"BLESSED is every one that feareth the LORD; that
walketh in His ways."
The Prophet Micah instructed us on what to look for in a man confessing a
right relationship with God - "He hath
shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee,
but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?"(Micah
6:8)
Walking with God is a constant and habitual thing. It can be best described
as a traveler on a journey who is in continual motion. This can be seen in
Genesis 13:17 where the Lord God told Abram to
"Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and
in the breadth of it..."
In other words, when we are walking with God, we are in motion. He is taking
us somewhere. Even though - at times - it may seem as though we are going
nowhere or that we are not moving at all - the opposite is true.
Walking with God is walking "even as He
walked"(1 John 2:6).
Since He is a Spirit, it definitely includes
"walking in the Spirit, and not fulfilling the lust of
the flesh."(Galatians 5:16).
How do we "walk in
the Spirit" so as to please God?
Our every thought, word, deed, and attitude must be in accordance with His
Holy Word and Will.
Being entirely dead to the world and the things of it, we set God always
before us...make His Word our rule and His Glory our aim...endeavor to
always please Him and avoid all that which would offend Him... follow,
imitate, and comply with His wishes.
It is imperative to understand that these
practices cannot be found in a believer's life only on Church days. It is
absurd to say that one is walking with God on Saturday, Sunday, or Wednesday
- but then go the way of the world and the flesh on the other days.
This is not walking with God!
Sad but true - there are many confessing to a relationship with the Almighty
when all along they are "walking in their
own counsels"(Psalm 81:12). They are willful, stubborn,
hardhearted, and rebellious to the things of God. They do not pattern their
lives after the counsel of the Scriptures but after the way of their own
wicked hearts and the sight of their eyes. Because they live in opposition
to His ways, He has given them up "unto
their own hearts' lust" (Psalm 81:12), and
they don't even know it.
Because they live contrary to His truths, laws, and counsels,
Leviticus 26:21 describes them as
"walking contrary" to God. And
whether they realize it or not - He, in turn, is
"walking contrary" to them.
Many are "walking with vanity"(Job
31:5). Instead of living sincerely, uprightly, and honestly in
their dealings with others - they are guilty of misrepresenting things for
their own gain and defrauding others. In order to get a "good
bargain," they lie and cheat.
Some are "walking in the statutes of their
fathers"(Ezekiel 20:18). Their
reasoning is that Grandpa and Dad seemingly got away with a certain sinful
and compromising practice and yet were upstanding citizens who were active
members in their Church. Never mind the fact that what Grandpa and Pops did
were anti-Scriptural and ungodly!
If what others do is against the principles of the Bible, they are not "walking
with God" - no matter what position they hold or held
in the Church. God will not be mocked! Not every one who admits to being in
communion with God is! Let's face it, folks!
Look around you and you will see that some people confessing a right
relationship with God are actually
"walking in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings,
and abominable idolatries"(1 Peter 4:3). They walk
continuously in the indulgence of their corrupt passions...their behavior is
shameless, insolent, immodest, and goes on unchecked and unbridled...their
looks and gestures are very lewd...they are wine-drinkers - drunkards if you
will - who love to go to parties or feasts where others are gathered
together for the sole purpose of drinking and committing all kinds of acts
of impurity and immorality.
How can it be possible for a people to
walk in such a manner and yet profess to be "walking
with God"? Even though it may be hard to believe such a thing is
possible - it is happening nonetheless!
Homosexuals and Adulterers are singing about a Heaven they will
never see or talking about a Rapture that they will never experience - that
is, unless they repent.
No one - absolutely no one - no matter what their position in the
Church or in society - is "walking with God"
who is walking in sin or after the ways of the world and the flesh.
It is time - like never before -
to get real!
Look around you and see the events that are happening. Seemingly, God has
pressed the button called "Fast motion" towards
the Greatest Event of all - the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus.
We can confess that we are "walking with
God" all day long. We can lie and even convince those
around us that we are doing so. But God knows! He knows those who are truly
"walking" with Him -
as Enoch and Noah. Time will tell!
May it be that everyone reading this message today will get enough
"fear of the Lord" in, on,
and around them that they will - if need be - stop playing games and get
right with God.
Game-playing has been over a long time
now!
It is time to get right with God - no matter if you are a Pastor, Deacon,
Sunday-School Teacher, Superintendent, Bishop, or Minister of Music.
God is not clowning around. This is serious business.
Let's be sure that the words of our mouths match our lifestyles.
2 Timothy 2:19 says -
"...And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity."
2 John 4 concludes with these words -
"I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children
walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father."
May God Bless His Word.
