From
Humiliation To Exaltation
"Here is a most remarkable expression: Jesus has conquered,
and is set down with the FATHER upon the Father's throne; he who
conquers through Christ sits down with Christ upon His throne: but
Christ's throne and the throne of the Father is the same; and it is
on this same throne that those who are faithful unto death are
finally to sit! How astonishing is this state of exaltation! The
dignity and grandeur of it who can conceive?" - Adam Clarke
In speaking of the Lord Jesus Christ's exaltation, the songwriter
penned the simple chorus as follows -
"He is exalted,
He is exalted,
He is exalted on high,
Creation shall praise Him,
The saints will adore Him,
For He is exalted on high."
In the Incarnation, He demonstrated unparalleled abasement. He
emptied Himself of the Glory that He had with the Father and became
a man so that He could redeem mankind from the penalty of sin. By
virtue of - on account of - in consequence of - as a reward for -
His sufferings and death on the Cross, He was exalted to the highest
state of universal supremacy or dominion.
Indeed, it can be said of Him -
above the angels and all of creation -
He is exalted on high!
Throughout the Scriptures, we can see this theme emphasized -
Acts 2:33 - "Therefore being by
the right hand of God exalted..."
Among the Hebrews, the "right hand"
denoted power. Hence, Christ was raised from His condition of
humiliation to the place of highest dignity -
"by the right hand of God."
Acts 5:31 - "Him hath God exalted
with His right hand..."
By a display of His Almighty Power, Father God exalted Jesus and
gave Him the highest position of authority.
Ephesians 1:20-21 - "Which He
wrought in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead, and set Him at
His own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all
principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name
that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to
come."
What a demonstration of Omnipotence was manifested when Christ was
raised from the dead. He was then set in a place, having authority
over all.
Ephesians 4:10 - "He that
descended is the same also that ascended up far above all
heavens..."
In His Incarnation, He entered into a state of utter abasement -
taking on the form of a servant. After His suffering, death, burial,
and resurrection, He then ascended above the heavens to become Lord
of all and Lord over all.
Philippians 2:9 - "Wherefore God
also hath highly exalted Him..."
As a reward of His humiliation and suffering, He was raised to an
exceeding height - the throne of glory - where He exercises dominion
over all. His rank, dignity, title and
"name" is above all others.
Hebrews 1:3 - "Who being the
brightness of His glory, and the express image of His person, and
upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by
Himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty
on high."
From this heightened position, He governs, maintains, sustains,
bears, carries out, and directs the course of the universe by His
powerful word or command.
Hebrews 2:9 - "But we see Jesus,
Who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of
death, crowned with glory and honour; that He by the grace of God
should taste death for every man."
Here is the Savior of all mankind once
"made a little lower than the angels" now
"crowned with glory and honour."
As a result of His condescension, He was raised to the place of
having absolute dominion over all things.
Hebrews 8:1 - "Now of the things
which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest,
Who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the
heavens."
No human priest could ever compare to this One. He is higher and
above all others - highly qualified for the task. He is
"such an high priest"
because of His Great Sacrifice on the Cross. This is the
"sum" of it all - to be
considered as being the principal thing, chief matter, or most
important point.
Hebrews 10:12 - "But this man,
after He had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on
the right hand of God; From henceforth expecting till His enemies be
made His footstool."
This Mighty Mediator is exalted to the place of greatest honor -
never to return to the place of suffering and death again. He awaits
for all things and His enemies to be thoroughly and completely
subdued.
1 Peter 3:22 - "Who is gone into
heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and
powers being made subject unto Him."
He - Who has "all power in heaven and
earth"(Matthew 28:18) - has all
"powers" and
"authorities" in heaven and earth under His command.
Revelation 3:21 - "...even as I
also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His throne."
Through His Sacrificial Death, Burial, and Resurrection, He
triumphed as a Mighty Conqueror over Satan - His arch enemy - and
the world which lies in the grip of the evil one.
The Lord Jesus was not satisfied with
just being exalted as the Triumphant One.
He desired to share His victories and honors with all those who
received Him as Lord of their lives.
To those who allow Him to rule over their lives, they, in turn,
partake of the mighty privileges of ruling and reigning in Him and
through Him from His position of exaltation -
"the right hand of the throne of the Majesty."
There is one stipulation.
Just as Jesus faced humiliation before experiencing exaltation,
even so must we.
Can there be a better Scripture to emphasize
this point than the words of John the Baptist as recorded in John
3:30 - "He must increase,
but I must decrease"?
As we allow our Self to suffer deprivation, loss, restraint, and
even death for His name's sake - and allow Him to live His life
through us - to rule and reign in and through us from His exalted
position at the Father's right hand - we will enjoy many blessings
in return. They are as follows -
Ephesians 4:10 - "He that
descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens,
that He might fill all things.)"
The One Who has "filled all things"
with His mighty influence and power is the Fountain of Blessings -
dispensing good things to all. He has gifts and graces to meet our
every position and condition. Whatever is empty, lacking, or
depleted in our lives, He can fill. He is "more than enough."
Acts 2:33 - "Therefore being by
the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the
promise of the Holy Ghost, He hath shed forth this, which ye now see
and hear."
He offers the Gift of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit with the
initial evidence of speaking in tongues to all those who will hunger
and thirst after righteousness. No one needs to ever be found
spiritually weak or feeble.
You can be endued with power from on high. Just simply ask.
Don't forget - He is the Mighty Baptizer in the Holy Spirit. Because
of His Exaltation, He has been given this Esteemed Position.
Acts 5:31 - "Him hath God exalted
with His right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give
repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins."
As "Prince," He exercises
dominion over all. As "Saviour,"
He has the power to deliver from sin, death, and Hell itself. From
His position of exaltation, He has the power to pardon the greatest
of offenders and totally transform their lives.
If you are struggling with a besetting sin today, the Lord Jesus can
and will help you - if you will simply ask in faith.
Romans 8:34 - "Who is he that
condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again,
Who is even at the right hand of God, Who also maketh intercession
for us."
Because of His Sacrificial Death on Calvary's Cross, we - who have
repented of our sins and received His gift of eternal life - are
free from all condemnation. Now Christ - as our High Priest - pleads
our cause and makes intercession for us before the mercy-seat in
heaven. We need never be troubled with any cares or problems that
come our way. All we have to do is commit them to the Lord. He is
well able to fix anything that is broken, solve any problem, or
recover that which was stolen.
Hebrews 10:10 - "By the which
will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus
Christ once for all."
Jesus Christ is well able to make the struggling saint victorious.
He is the Mighty Sanctifier. Through His Grace and Mighty Holy
Spirit, He can conform anyone - who is willing - into His image and
likeness.
Revelation 3:21 - "To Him that
overcometh will I grant to sit with Me in My throne, even as I also
overcame, and am set down with My Father in His throne."
Just as Jesus is ruling and reigning, He desires that we exercise
authority in our world as well. He calls us
"overcomers" -
"more than conquerors"(Romans 8:37). He doesn't
promise us defeat but victory in every area of our lives.
Jesus is exalted. He is seated at the
right hand of the Father in the seat of power. He is ruling and
reigning over all.
His exaltation came as a result of His
humiliation - His utter abasement in leaving Heaven's Glory to
become a man and suffer death on the Cross.
He desires that we share in His honors
and triumph.
But it will only happen if we will allow Him to
"increase"
while we "decrease."
Proverbs 15:33 says - "...and
before honour is humility."
There is no other way!
Are you willing to suffer humiliation so that
Christ may be exalted in your life?
If you are, then get ready!
The Blessings are about to overtake you.
May God Bless His Word.
