Can You Blame Me For Seeking After
Jesus?
Jesus is our
"Beloved" and our
"Friend."
We walk in
intimate fellowship with Him.
Why should any
wonder that we long after Him?
Song of Solomon 5:9 inquires -
"What is thy beloved more than
another beloved...?
By asking this question, the daughters of Jerusalem gave the bride
a wonderful opportunity to break out into one of the most
highly-wrought descriptions of her spouse. What they were actually
asking her was -
Why are you so set upon this One
more than on others?
What is there about Him that
makes Him so distinct from any other
"beloved"?
Why are you so crazy about Him?
What is so special about Him?
When one is in love with another, nothing pleases that individual
more than to be able to talk profusely
about their loved one. This was no exception for the
bride. She immediately launched into one of the most charming
descriptions of her "beloved,"
hoping to convince the daughters of Jerusalem of His
outstanding qualities.
Isn't this just what we are hoping for and
anticipating about our "Beloved"
- JESUS!
We are constantly waiting for the
opportunity to have someone ask us why we are so in love with Him.
What is it about this Jesus that
makes us sing - even when there is no reason to sing?
What is it that makes us cry
when there is no reason to cry?
What is it that causes us to
endure the hardest of times with the sweetest of dispositions?
How is it that we will even
undergo ridicule, rejection, and great loss for His name's sake?
How could we possibly walk with
Him with High Praises on our lips and joy in our hearts through
days, weeks, months, and even years of misunderstandings,
perplexities, confusion, and simply no answer for the things that
are going on around us?
Oh! Saints of God, just let the world come to us and ask us -
"What is thy beloved more than
another beloved?" What is it about your Loved
One that is better than the enticements and razzle-dazzle of this
world or the pleasures of sin, Satan, and the flesh?
1 Peter 3:15 - In fact, why wait until they
ask? We need to "sanctify the
Lord God" in our hearts, and like the spouse,
"be ready always to give an
answer to every man that asketh...a reason of the hope"
that is in us. Why shouldn't we be so bold as to initiate the
conversation among the heathen and tell them why this
"same Jesus" is so
special to us - why He excels all the idols that man and the devil
could conjure up and any other false gods of other religions and
faiths? We should do all that we can to acquaint others with the
loveliness of our
"Beloved."
The spouse saw her "beloved"
as one of incomparable perfection and unparalleled worth. He was
"more than another beloved."
She went on to describe him unto the others.
In this message, we would like to examine her
beautiful description in light of our Savior and
King - Jesus!
1. Oh, Such Glory, Beauty, &
Radiance Is His
Song of Solomon 5:10
- "My
beloved is white and ruddy..."
These colors are the essentials for the finest of
complexions. They reflect one of perfect health or that admired in
youth. They make up a complete beauty. The
"white" is shining,
glowing, and radiant. It speaks to us of the godliness, purity,
spotless innocency, and glory of the Precious Lamb of God. The
"red"
reminds us of His Passion, sufferings, and the Blood that was
shed for our redemption.
2. There Is None Like Him
Song of Solomon 5:10 -
"...the chiefest among ten thousand."
Ten thousand in Biblical Numerics
represents a countless number. The
Loveliness found in Jesus can't be found in any other. There is
none like Him. He is fairer and comelier than any and all. He is
the "bannered one" among a myriad. He is
the standard-bearer and leader of 10,000 warriors. He should have
the uppermost and innermost place in our hearts. He is the Captain
or chief over all. Everything else is accounted as loss and even
dung in comparison to Him.
3. He Is The Sovereign God
Song of Solomon 5:11 -
"His head is as the most fine gold..."
"Gold" is
the highest of metals. In relation to God, it represents His high
place over all, sovereign dominion, and divine attributes. Just as
the "gold"
is shining and strong, even so is His kingdom glorious and
powerful. The Lord Jesus is Excellent!
He has a vital influence over His Body, the Church -
Colossians 2:10 -
"which is the head of all principality and
power."
Ephesians 1:22-23 -
"And hath put all things under His feet, and
gave Him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is
His body, the fullness of Him that filleth all in all."
Colossians 1:18 -
"And He is the head of the body, the
church..."
4. He Is Eternal & Everlasting
Song of Solomon 5:11 - "...His
locks are bushy, and black as a raven."
When someone begins to decline in years, their head becomes filled
with grey hairs. Our "Beloved"
here is depicted as having hair that is
"black as a raven."
This symbolizes His everlasting vigor.
He suffers no loss of might and power whatsoever. In Him, there is
no decay and there is nothing that waxes old. He is
immortal, eternal, and never changing. He is forever Faithful.
Psalm 90:2 -
"...even from everlasting to everlasting, Thou art God."
Hebrews 13:8 -
"Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever."
He is forever the same! Oh! Praise His Holy Name!
5. He Is A Personal God
Song of Solomon 5:12 -
"His eyes are as the eyes of doves by
the rivers of waters, washed with milk, and fitly set."
The eyes of our "Beloved"
are as "the eyes of doves."
What does that mean? The most beautiful feature of the dove is her
eyes. Eyes are a means of expressing feeling, devotion, and love
towards another. In a distant relationship, a person might
communicate through words and letters. But in intimacy, a person
will communicate through the expression in his or her eyes. Our
God communicates with us through His eyes - not in a distant
relationship, but one that is intimate -
Psalm 34:15 - "The
eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous..."
1 Peter 3:12 -
"FOR THE EYES OF THE LORD ARE OVER THE RIGHTEOUS..."
Psalm 32:8 -
"...I will guide thee with Mine eye."
6. Never Man Spake Like This Man
Song of Solomon 5:13 -
"...His lips like lilies, dropping sweet
smelling myrrh."
Like the fragrance of lilies, the words of
the Lord Jesus are sweet and pleasant.
Psalm 19:10 - They are sweeter than honey -
"...sweeter also than honey and the
honeycomb."
John 6:63 - They are unlike any man's words in
that they are spirit and life-giving.-
"...the words that I speak unto you, they
are spirit, and they are life."
Psalm 12:6 - They are pure -
"The words of the LORD are pure words: as
silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times."
Psalm 45:2 - They are gracious -
"...grace is poured into Thy lips..."
Luke 4:22 -
"And all bare Him witness, and wondered at the gracious words
which proceeded out of His mouth..."
John 7:46 - They are unique and distinct
- "...Never man spake like this
man."
Hebrews 4:12 - They are powerful and energizing
- "For the word of God is quick,
and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword..."
Song of Solomon 5:16 -
"His mouth is most sweet..."
Every word of His mouth is sweetness, mildness, and goodness. They
are the essence of every delight. His voice is so charming,
appealing, soothing, and comforting. His eloquence is superb.
Psalm 119:103 -
"How sweet are Thy words unto my taste! yea,
sweeter than honey to my mouth!"
Song of Solomon 1:2 -
"Let Him kiss me with the kisses of His
mouth: for Thy love is better than wine."
7. He Is Able To Carry Out &
Establish God's Plans
Song of Solomon 5:14
- "His hands are as
gold rings set with the beryl..."
His hands are stretched out to His people. They are
instruments of His power.
As "gold rings," they
are depicted as being strong. The works of His hands are very
beautiful and becoming. He is able to firmly establish and
complete that which He has started in His creation. He is able to
complete all of His plans and purposes. He is God.
The "gold"
reminds us that He is majestic and worthy of all of our Honor and
Praise for the mighty things that He does on our behalf.
8. He Has Tender Compassion &
Affection For His Own
Song of Solomon 5:14 -
"...His belly is as bright ivory overlaid
with sapphires."
His "belly"
or bowels are full of tender compassion and affection for
his spouse. His love is not casual nor superficial. He is moved
with great expressions of love for His Body - His Bride. This
sacrificial love is like polished, shimmering ivory overlaid with
precious sapphire stones. It denotes a heavenly clearness - there
is nothing that comes in its way or clouds it out. It is crystal
clear.
9. He Has Immovable Strength &
Stability
Song of Solomon 5:15
- "His
legs are as pillars of marble, set upon sockets of fine gold..."
His "legs"
signify His ability to stand.
"As pillars of
marble" depict His stability and
steadfastness. There is nothing in Him nor in His kingdom that can
ever - in the least bit - be shaken or moved -
Hebrews 12:28 -
"Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which
cannot be moved..."
Matthew 16:18 -
"...and upon this Rock I will build My
church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."
Psalm 62:2 -
"He only is my rock and my salvation: He is my defence; I shall
not be greatly moved."
He is able to carry the weight of the world upon
His shoulders and never buckle down under it. In Him we have a "sure
foundation" -
Isaiah 28:16 -
"...Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone,
a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth
shall not make haste."
Our walk in Him is established and safe from all
harm. He keeps our feet from falling so that we may walk uprightly
before God and men in the land of the living -
Psalm 56:13 -
"For Thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt Thou not deliver
my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of
the living?"
Psalm 116:8-9 -
"For Thou hast delivered...my feet
from falling. I will walk before the LORD in the land of the
living."
10. He Is The Highly Exalted One
Song of Solomon 5:15 -
"...His countenance is as Lebanon,
excellent as the cedars."
Mount Lebanon was exalted above all the other mountains of
Jerusalem. Like this stately hill, Christ Jesus is beautiful and
charming to all. As the "cedars"
of Lebanon excelled other trees in height and strength, even so
does He excel others in stature and majestic beauty. He is of an
elevated character. He is
"Excellent" -
Job 37:23 -
"...He is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in plenty of
justice..."
Psalm 8:9 - "O
LORD our LORD, how excellent is Thy name in all the earth!"
Psalm 36:7 -
"How excellent is Thy lovingkindness, O God..."
Psalm 148:13 -
"...for His name alone is excellent..."
Psalm 150:2 -
"...praise Him according to His excellent greatness."
11. He Is All That One Could Ever
Desire
Song of Solomon 5:16 -
"...yea, He is altogether lovely..."
He is the fulfillment of all desires. In Him is found all
delights, satisfaction, and completion. He is the epitome of
Loveliness.
How could we not love Him and yearn for Him since He is so
very Lovely?
12. He Is Trustworthy & Loyal
Song of Solomon 5:16
-
"...This is my beloved, and this is my
friend, O daughters of Jerusalem."
Jesus is my everything.
"Blessed
assurance, Jesus is mine."
He is my Lord, my
God, my Rock, fortress, deliverer, strength, and
salvation. He is mine, mine - all mine.
He is "my
beloved." He's my life's choice and soul's
rest. I have chosen Him to be my all-in-all.
He is -
...the One I am living for and the One worth dying
for
...the One who is worth giving up all the treasures
of the field just to purchase Him in our lives
..."my friend"
...loyal, trustworthy, sincere, and truthful.
We can always count on Him for He is forever
faithful!
"What is thy beloved
more than another beloved?"
To the world we shout from the rooftops -
He's indescribable!
He's so lovely!
He exceeds all others!
He's more than you
could ever imagine Him to be!
In closing, read what other writers said about Him -
Napoleon Bonaparte -
"If Socrates would enter the room, we should
rise and do him honor. But if Jesus Christ came into the room, we
should fall down on our knees and worship Him."
J.C. Ryle - "No
man ever errs on the side of giving too much honor to God the
Son."
"No man ever
thought too much of Christ."
Charles Spurgeon -
"No physician like the Lord, no tonic like His promise, no wine
like His love."
D Martyn Lloyd-Jones -
"How divinely supreme is our Lord above all
others!"
"What is
thy beloved more than another beloved?"
He is our "Beloved,"
and He is our "Friend."
Let's tell the whole world about Him!
Let's not hesitate one more minute!
Let's do it today!
May God Bless His Word.
