How To Avoid A Life Of
Tedious Monotony
How would you describe your
life? Do you feel as though you are spending your days in vain and
fruitless wanderings around the same mountain, seemingly accomplishing
nothing, and wondering if things will ever change? What is the solution?
The Bible gives the answer.
Psalm 78:33 gives a very sad
commentary on the children of Israel - "Therefore their days did He
consume in vanity, and their years in trouble."
Instead of enjoying the
Promised Land, these people wandered forty years in the wilderness, beset
by terrors, troubles, and alarms. They enjoyed such little comfort and
purpose for their lives.
Why? What could possibly cause such a horrible state of "existence" - such
sadness, gloominess, and cheerlessness?
Notice that the Scripture says that "their days did He consume in
vanity..." Who is the "He" in that verse? It is none other than God
Almighty.
What did they do to incur His awful wrath and judgment?
Several verses in Psalm 78 present the cause for their apparently wasted
existence.
-
Psalm 78:11 - "And forgat His
works, and His wonders that He had showed them."
-
Psalm 78:22 - "Because they
believed not in God, and trusted not in His salvation."
-
Psalm 78:32 - "For all this
they sinned still, and believed not for His wondrous works."
-
Psalm 78:42 - "They remembered
not His hand, nor the day when He delivered them from the enemy."
The cause for their
"meaningless existence" can be summed up in seven words - "Forgat,"
believed not," "trusted not," and "remembered not."
Psalm 78:11 - The children of
Israel forgot God's wonderful works that He repeatedly displayed on their
behalf - "...forgat His works, and His wonders that He had showed them."
You ask - How could they possibly do this? How could they forget the
Mighty Miracles that they witnessed time and time again?
In spite of all that they experienced, they didn't believe in God's power
or promises.
-
Psalm 78:22 - They still
doubted His ability to save them from any and all troubles - "...believed
not in God, and trusted not in His salvation."
-
Psalm 78:23 - God proved to
them that He had absolute control over the clouds and was able to rain
down abundance over them and supply any need that they could possibly face
- "Though He had commanded the clouds from above..."
-
Psalm 78:23 - He proved to
them that He had the keys to the "doors of heaven" and could shower
blessings upon them in such abundance that all would have enough -
"...opened the doors of heaven."
-
Psalm 78:24 - He supplied
heavenly grain for them referred to as "manna" or the "corn of heaven."
-
Psalm 78:27 - He also provided
"flesh" "as dust" and "feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea." In
comparing this provision to the "dust" and the "sand of the sea," the Holy
Spirit desired to get across to us the superabundance of the supply.
-
Psalm 78:28 - What is really
special is that God brought the provisions right to their back door. They
did not have to go out looking for them. "...He let it fall in the midst
of their camp, round about their habitations."
-
Psalm 78:29 - What a glorious
picture we have here! Everyone was blessed and provided for! - "So they
did eat, and were well filled: for He gave them their own desire."
-
Psalm 78:25 - "Man did eat
angels' food: He sent them meat to the full."
This was not any ole common
provision either. God gave them the Best!
"Angels' food" refers to the food of nobles and princes - the rich, the
great, and the mighty. It was the most delicate of sustenance, and it was
provided to the fullest measure.
How did the Children of Israel react to all of these miracles?
They "forgat," "believed not," "trusted not," and "remembered not."
How did God react to their gross unbelief and ungratefulness?
Psalm 78:33 - "Therefore their
days did He consume in vanity, and their years in trouble."
What about you, O Christian?
Where should you be in your walk with the Lord? Where exactly are you?
-
Are you still going around the
same mountain?
-
Are you still traveling
through a spiritual wilderness when you should be enjoying the blessings
of the Promised Land?
-
Have you, like the Israelites,
sinned against the Lord through unbelief?
-
Have you forgotten Who He is
and what He is capable of doing?
-
Have you forgotten that He
still has command over the clouds and can rain down blessings upon you and
your children in great supply for your every need?
-
Have you forgotten that He
alone has the keys to the "doors of heaven" and can shower you with
amazing answers to your prayers?
-
Have you forgotten that your
blessings are by grace and that you don't have to work for them? That they
have already been provided for? God will even bring them to your doorstep
- if you will only believe in His power and promises.
How is it that you have
allowed unbelief and fear to overtake your heart and mind?
Zephaniah 3:17 - Don't the
Scriptures say - "The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; He will
save, He will rejoice over thee with joy..."
Hebrews 13:8 - "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for
ever."
Malachi 3:5 - "For I am the LORD, I change not..."
Your unbelief has caused you to merely "exist" rather than "live" as God
designed.
Repent of all sin today.
Don't let your heart be hardened again through unbelief.
Rehearse for yourself and your children all of the former favors from God
bestowed on your family.
Then determine that - come hell or high water - you and your household
will serve the Lord in faith and trust.
You will believe God and trust in His salvation.
May God Bless His Word.
